Reflections from October 23-24

In October, I had the privilege of presenting at the AGE-WELL 2024 conference in Edmonton, a pivotal event dedicated to aging and cognitive health innovations. Attending my first AGE-WELL conference alongside teammate Andrei was a meaningful opportunity to connect with researchers, advocates, and innovators working passionately to improve the lives of older adults. While aging and cognitive health aren’t my primary areas of research, this field is near to my heart, and being part of this event left me inspired and energized.

My presentation focused on the VR-SIM Carers project, a VR simulation-based platform designed to empower dementia caregivers with essential skills-building opportunities in a safe, supportive environment. The talk, titled “Empowering Dementia Caregivers with a Virtual Reality (VR) Simulation-Based Skills-Building Platform - Knowledge Users’ Perspectives,” showcased a thematic analysis of knowledge users’ feedback on the VR-SIM Carers project and highlighted the transformative potential of our VR platform in caregiver training. The VR-SIM Carers platform, accessible through www.vrsimcarers.ca, is helping caregivers build critical skills and practice techniques that enhance their caregiving capabilities, ultimately, improving their quality of life.

One highlight of the conference was presenting alongside Paul D. Lea, a determined dementia advocate who has lived with vascular dementia for 15 years. Paul shared how he relies on various technologies to manage his life and improve his well-being daily, a moving reminder of the real-world impact these innovations can have.

Another memorable session discussed the Japanese concept of ikigai, or living with purpose—a theme that resonated deeply as I reflected on my motivations in both research and mentorship. This event reminded me of the powerful role purpose plays in our lives and the importance of contributing meaningfully to the health and well-being of others.

I’m grateful to Ontario Shores for this experience and for the opportunity to contribute to an learn from such an impactful conference. The knowledge gained and connections made will continue to inspire me as I work alongside the VR-SIM Carers team to support and empower dementia caregivers through technology.
